3 Common Signs to Look for in an Electrical Emergency

Often when presented with a dangerous situation, many people are unsure of what to do or whether they should call for emergency help in the first place.  Because these situations don’t happen often, it is important to know the signs of an electrical emergency and when you need to call an electrician for help.  Here are three signs that you should call an emergency electrician as soon as possible.

  • A Burning Smell

Whenever there is a burning odor, especially when it comes to electrical equipment, this is a big red flag.  Though some appliances may have that odd smell of dust burning when first turned on, that should not last more than a few minutes. Outlets, cords, and other equipment should not have a burnt smell. If you experience a burning smell while using any electrical equipment, you should call an emergency electrician immediately as it could lead to a much more dangerous situation.

  • Buzzing or Humming

If you experience any sort of buzzing or humming sound coming from your electrical equipment, especially your breaker box, this could be a big problem. Humming or buzzing often means something is wrong with the circuits and wiring linked to the breaker box, and they should be looked at immediately to prevent future problems and damage.

  • Sparking

Most types of common electrical equipment will not be sparking during usage.  If you experience any sort of abnormal sparking in your electrical equipment, whether it be cords or the appliance itself, you should call an emergency electrician to come to assess the situation. Sparking is nothing to mess around with and can cause large fires that are difficult to put out.
